Differences between Formula 1 and Circuit of the Americas

To many local residents who were not familiar with the sport, Formula 1 and Circuit of the Americas seem synonomous.  In fact, they are two very different separate entities run by very different people with very different goals. 

Formula 1 is a particular style of racing with a particular type of car- a single seat, open-wheeled vehicle using the highest level of technology available to the automotive industry.  Formula 1 is a type of racing governed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).  Currently the rights to operate this racing series belong to a man named Bernie Ecclestone, a citizen of the UK.  Formula 1 is a true international sport, with races taking place on purpose built tracks and even city streets in countries all over the globe, on every continent except Antartica.  The drivers and constructors (manufacturers) are also from all over the globe, and have included not only companies such as Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren, but also Ford, Toyota, and Honda. 

The Circuit of the Americas is first and foremost a purpose built racetrack.  The track was designed to meet the specifications of a Formula 1 race, but can also accomodate various other types of racing, including MotoGP motorcycle racing, Australian V8 Supercars, and other types of racing as well.  The ownership of the Circuit of the Americas belongs largely to Texas Billionaire and media mogul Red McCombs and Austin businessman Robert (Bobbie) Epstein.  The track and associated facitilites were constructed in Southeast Travis County near Austin, Texas.

Second Saturday Cruise-in cancelled for November

Due to the Veteran’s Day car show in Bastrop, Races2U will not be hosting a cruise-in this coming Saturday.  The Veteran’s day show in Bastrop is one of the largest and best shows in Central Texas, and we encourage all our fans to come out and participate.  This year funds raised from the car show will go to the Bastrop Independent School District youth programs.  http://bastropdba.org/vets.html

Formula 1 Racing in Austin gets into gear!

Tickets to the Formula 1 US Grand Prix were delivered via Federal Express today. Races2U will be giving away a pair of these much coveted tickets to the racer who sets the best lap time on our scale replica of the Circuit of the Americas. Choose a 1:32 scale Formula 1 car from Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull, Lotus/Renault, Williams, or Ferrari. See how quickly you can navigate the steep incline and tight left hand turn at T1, and how fast you can go on the long straight between turns 11 and 12.  A $3 dollar fee for 20 laps could win you tickets worth over $300!  Come in to the Races2U store in North Austin any time up until Nov 15 to test your skills.  The more practice you get, the better times you can post, and the more likely you will be to enjoy the inaugural race at the Circuit of the Americas.

Items permitted at Races2U

Compare and contrast permitted/prohibited items policies at Circuit of the Americas and Races2U

AUSTIN, TX (Sept. 28, 2012) – Circuit of The Americas has released a list of prohibited items leading up to the FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX, Nov. 16-18, 2012. The list is intended to benefit the ticketholders, preparing them to enter the race quickly and efficiently. The following items will not be permitted inside the gates of the circuit. In addition to items specifically listed here, other items that may be deemed to present a potential hindrance or threat may also be prohibited.
Alcoholic Beverages- Permitted at Races2U from 8pm to close Thursdays and Saturdays- BYOB
Animals (exception for certified service animals)- Same at Races2U
Bags or parcels larger than 12X12X20 inches- We don’t charge for excess baggage at Races2U
Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, skates, segways, golf carts or other unauthorized means of transportation- Feel free to use whatever transportation you like to arrive at Races2U, but please leave your vehicle outside the store.
Coolers, thermoses or ice chests- Bring ‘em on in to the store, or use our mini-fridge.
Distribution of unauthorized promotional or commercial material- Ask us nicely, and at Races2U we are happy to help promote other small businesses.
Food and Beverage (Note: sealed, individual, plastic bottles of water are allowed)-Bring what you like to Races2U, but please don’t feed the employees, they may bite!
Fireworks, explosives or other incendiary devices- We don’t want them at Races2U, either!
Glass or metal containers of any style- These are fine at Races2U
Illegal substances- Duh!
Items that may be deemed a safety hazard or annoyance to participants or guests (balls, Frisbees, balloons, projectiles, horns, radios, bells, whistles, musical instruments, laser pointers, etc.)- Please, no balls, frisbees, or projectiles around the slot car tracks. Please feel free to bring your own music. Balloons are encouraged.
Large, golf-type umbrellas- Bad luck to open them indoors
Non-collapsible chairs-Races2U has plenty of comfortable seating
Tents or canopies- Permitted only during monthly car shows or special events at Races2U
Video cameras, audio recording devices and tripods; no video recording will be allowed- Please feel free to video your Races2U experience and share it on YouTube.
Weapons of any kind, including guns, knives, pepper spray, handcuffs, nightsticks or other items

The following items will be permitted inside the circuit gates.-We don’t want that stuff here, either.
Blankets
Umbrellas (small, hand-held style)
Baby strollers-
Portable, collapsible chairs
Personal camera equipment (e.g. digital cameras, point-and-click digital cameras or film cameras)

MotoGP coming to Austin!

The world’s greatest motorcycle racing series will be coming to the Circuit of the Americas in 2013, assuming that the world doesn’t end this year. Then again, the Mayan’s never predicted motorcycles, did they? Looking forward to watching some great motorcycle racing in Austin next year. AND! Races2U has just affiliated with Tracks on the Move, serving New Jersey and the New York City area. Tracks on the Move has been in business for over 15 years, and uses Carrera Digital slot cars for parties and events throughout the upper Mid-Atlantic region. Now in conjunction with Slot Car Rental in Michigan serving the upper Midwest and RPM Racing serving Virginia and Washington DC, Races2U and our affiliates can bring the fun and excitement of slot car racing to you in much of the country. If the rumors hold true, it looks like Sergio Perez may be taking Lewis Hamilton’s spot at McLaren in the next F1 season.  Let’s see how things work out!

 

To all our friends and colleagues in the service industry who are eagerly awaiting the Formula 1 fans from around the world to converge on Texas- Please be aware that tipping for service is a very American custom, and does not exist or is limited in scope in many other countries.  Although many savvy travelers from abroad are aware of our customs, many are not.  If a non-American guest does not leave you a tip, do not take it as a personal offense or that the customer is “cheap”.  They may simply not understand our customs.

For those Formula 1 fans who are coming to Austin (or the US) for the first time, please be aware that it is customary to leave a 15% gratuity for average service, 18% for good service, and anything above that is at your discretion.  Frequently restaurants may include the gratuity as part of your bill, especially if you are in a group of 6 or more people, so please be aware of this as well. Aside from servers in restaurants, it is also customary to leave a tip on the bed each morning in your hotel room for the cleaning personnel, valets who park your cars, and bartenders who serve drinks.

Also, many other countries include sales tax in the price of their items, and when someone from one of these countries sees a price on an item, that is usually what they expect to pay.  When they receive a check for more than they expected, please explain to them that sales tax is an addition to the final bill.  A savvy server or bartender will inform a customer of this beforehand to avoid any surprises later.

As in any successful relationship, communication is key.  Yes, many of the foreigners visiting us for the first time may speak English quite well, but that does not mean that they will understand all our customs and traditions.  Please use patience and understanding and remember to show our guests real Texas hospitality when they arrive.
