NASCAR racing with ABI-Labs

Races2U partnered with RC Excitement to bring NASCAR RC racing to the ABI Labs Block party earlier this month.  ABI-LAB is a cutting edge incubator for research and biotechnology companies to work, grow, and thrive. Their mission is to provide lab spaces that allow our companies to succeed and successfully contribute scientific innovation.  RC Excitement is the Northeast’s Premier Radio Control Complex.  They carry many of the top RC brands for all kinds of fun, including not only the Losi NASCAR used in this event, but off-road and crawler and more.  Their shop is located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and they serve the entire New England area.  We are proud to partner with these great people, and if you need us to bring RC racing to you anywhere from Boston to Bangor, know that Races2U and RC Excitement have you covered.

What are some rules for pinewood derby?

- The main body structure must be made of pine wood. The substitution of other woods (i.e. harder, denser, heavier woods) is expressly forbidden.
- Weights are preferred to be inset in the body or on top of the car to aid in a safe stop at the end of the track. Weights on the bottom of the car may drag on the raised guide rail for the track slowing the car considerably and potentially damaging the track.
- No part of the car or attachment to any car, which is metal, pointed, sharp, and/or jagged, may be capable of contacting any part of the track. Only the vehicle’s wheels should touch the track.
- Drilled holes or slots can be used to mount axles.
- ONLY DRY LUBRICANT(s) ALLOWED. No oil lubricants are allowed.
- Width - Not to exceed 2 3/4 inches
- Length - Not to exceed 7 inches
- Weight - Not to exceed 5.0 ounces on scale accurate to 1/10 ounce.
- Center Rail Width - Must clear center guide rails, typically no less than 1-3/4 inches minimum.
- Bottom - No less than 3/8 inches from track surface between center rails. 1. Fender flairs with less clearance are acceptable as long as the center rail width clearance is maintained.
- The following items are PROHIBITED: 1. Springs 2. Starting devices or propellants 3. Electronic or lighting devices that interfere with the race electronics. 4. Liquids, wet paint, oil, sticky substance, or powders of any kind (other than axle lubrication) 5. Glass or excessively fragile parts 6. Bearings, bushings, washers, sleeves, hubcaps or inserts attached to or in contact with the axle, body or wheels. 7. Loose objects on car 8. Magnets 
- Use only Official Pinewood Derby wheels.
- Outer wheel surface may be lightly sanded, shaved, or polished to remove surface imperfections, mold casting burrs, and correct off center wheel bores. • All 4 wheels MUST touch the track 
- Nail type axles are required.
- Axles must be mounted into the wood sections of the car.
- Axles may NOT be bent.
- The use of exposed Lead(Pb) in cars is prohibited. All Lead(Pb) must be completely sealed and safe from all possible contact. There are many reasonably priced alternatives that should be used instead.

Long Island RC Racing

With help from our new partner Platinum Hobbies in Middle Island New York, Races2U set up an RC racetrack at Gurney's Resort for Monarch Capital.  Platinum Hobbies is a large RC focused hobby shop in Long Island with all sorts of RC boats, planes, and of course, race cars!  They have a track set up in store for guests to use, and they have a lot of experience with all sorts of RC vehicles.  They were a natural choice for us to partner with for this event, having a proven track record of customer service as well as knowledge of the equipment we use for our racing.  Gurney's is a beautiful upscale resort on the far Eastern tip of Long Island.  Known for the beautiful views and beaches as well as food and lodging, this was a lovely venue for us to set up our racing. Monarch Alternative Capital is an opportunistic credit and real estate manager with offices in New York, London, and West Palm Beach. They are investors seeking attractive opportunities across multiple verticals including corporate, real estate, structured credit, and special situations.  A big "Thank you" to David at Monarch for having us be a part of this event, and to Steven for making sure everything ran smoothly!

At the Monaco Grand Prix - Part 1

The first of several upcoming posts and pictures from our adventures at the Monaco Grand Prix. The first thing that struck us is how absolutely beautiful everything is, and on a scale almost incomprehensible if you haven't traveled. This is one of the smallest and wealthiest contries on the planet, and the amount of money on display here was enough to stagger the mind. The cliffs of Monter Carlo rising hundreds of feet obove the water provided a spectacular background to all the superyachts in the harbor. Everything and everyone was beautiful- the natural beauty of the rocks and all the flowering plants, to the architcture, to the cars, to the people. This is the true "jet set" level, and to be here requires not only being in good shape financially, but also physically. The city was formed hundreds of years before automobiles, and although there are many drivable streets, most of the commerce and transportation is done on foot. The town is very wakable, but the hills are very steep. Many flights of stairs involved in getting around town. These are just a few shots of someof the town, crowds, and boats. Look for more in the upcoming days, and more about the race too!

New Aston Martin livery for Monaco GP

From Rock to Racetrack: The story of Maaden's Monaco Grand Prix livery transformation

For the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, Aston Martin Aramco and Principal Partner Maaden have unveiled one of the most visually ambitious Formula One liveries to date.

The livery traces the transformation of metals and minerals from the earth to high-performance engineering. The campaign, titled 'From Rock to Racetrack', showcases how materials unearthed by Maaden are transformed into the building blocks that help power our modern society.

The bespoke Monaco livery features a colour-shifting, iridescent finish created using a specialist wrap material. The effect is a livery that will visibly change colour as the AMR26 makes its way around the iconic Monaco street circuit, symbolising the transformation of raw materials into advanced technology.

For Maaden, one of the fastest-growing mining and metals companies in the world, transformation sits at the centre of its identity. From unlocking vast mineral potential to enabling industries of the future, the company's work is built on turning raw materials into opportunity, infrastructure, innovation, and progress.

That same idea is the creative foundation for the team's bespoke livery for the Monaco Grand Prix.

A livery designed to transform

The livery design utilises a specialist colour-shifting wrap material which creates an iridescent effect across selected sections of the AMR26.

Depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions, the car appears to change colour as it moves – an effect the team saw as the perfect visual metaphor for transformation itself.

The finish constantly evolves corner by corner, appearing one shade on entry and entirely different on exit, and takes inspiration from Andromeda Red, a highly exclusive, colour-shifting paint option offered by Aston Martin, most famously seen on the limited-production Valour and Valhalla hypercars.

The wrap uses a colour-shift satin finish vinyl, creating an immersive and interactive visual experience that feels dynamic even when the car is stationary. 

The colour palette itself draws directly from the minerals and metals central to Maaden's business, with tones inspired by gold, copper, aluminium, and iron woven throughout.

The F1 car canvas

While the final result appears seamless, delivering it presented both technical and creative challenges.

Maaden's original brief called for something bold, futuristic, and visually striking – a design capable of telling the story of the transformation journey through pure graphic form on a moving Formula One car.

That led the team to focus heavily on materiality, using the wrap itself not simply as decoration, but as the storytelling device.

Applying specialist wrap materials to a Formula One car requires extensive planning and careful consideration around weight, durability, heat resistance, and aerodynamic performance.

The wrap could not simply be applied across the entire car. Every additional layer adds weight, thickness, and raised edges that can affect aerodynamic performance, so the iridescent surfaces had to be deployed selectively in areas where the impact would be less critical.

The material used for this application also provided unique challenges. Ordinarily the team might laminate a printed wrap with a clear layer to make it more robust throughout a race weekend. However, this adds more weight and thickness to the material and, in this instance, the colour-changing effect would also be compromised. To meet this, special material preparation and printing techniques have been used to retain the lightweight and thin properties of the base material, while remaining durable.

There are also logistical factors to be aware of with such projects. With the season being so busy, the team had to plan well in advance to make sure the necessary car parts were available for the livery to be applied at a suitable time, both at the AMR Technology Campus and trackside, and so as not to impact the planned race car build schedules.

The challenge then became creating something that still felt like a complete livery takeover rather than isolated design details.

The hidden craft behind the design

The final livery is the result of extraordinary precision and an immense level of craft.

Hundreds of hours were spent refining the concept, with several areas of the team involved the project, from design to marketing to car build.

One of the defining features of the design is the use of hexagonal patterns across the car. Inspired by the Maaden icon, the hexagons create an organic transition between Aston Martin Racing Green, black carbon surfaces, and the iridescent material itself.

The pattern also solved a practical design problem. Because traditional gradients could not be printed onto the colour-shifting wrap, the hexagonal structure creates the illusion of colour fade and movement to the human eye.

Every section of the pattern was carefully considered to work across the AMR26's body surfaces and constantly changing viewing angles. A graphic treatment that looked perfect on one section of the car could behave entirely differently elsewhere once moving.

More than 100 pattern variations were produced during development, while around 30 visual concepts were explored before the final direction was selected, with Maaden providing feedback and input throughout.

The process also pushed the team into developing new digital tools. Custom hexagonal pattern generator software was developed to give greater control over the flexibility and application of the pattern across the car, while advanced renders and virtual Monaco simulations were used to study how the colour-shifting material would behave under real-world lighting conditions.

The outcome is a livery engineered for motion, one that transforms continuously as the AMR26 passes through Monaco's streets.
