IHRA Buys Popular Memphis Race Track

This article was from SpeedSport.com

FAIRFIELD, Ohio — The International Hot Rod Association has officially completed the acquisition of the historic motorsports facility formerly known as Memphis International Raceway and Memphis Motorsports Park.

The sale of the multi-purpose Millington, Tenn., facility closed on December 23.

Originally opened in the late 1980s, the facility has played a significant role in American motorsports history.

It has hosted major drag racing events and national touring series and was, at one point, sanctioned by IHRA, hosting IHRA-sanctioned drag racing events during that time. With the property now under IHRA ownership, the acquisition represents a full-circle moment that reconnects the track’s past with a renewed vision for its future.

The facility has long contributed to tourism and economic activity in Millington and Shelby County. Under IHRA ownership, it will operate as a multi-use destination supporting drag racing, stock car competition, grassroots motorsports, and other large-scale events that engage the broader community and region.

“This investment honors the legacy of Memphis Motorsports Park while positioning it for a strong future. IHRA’s acquisition reflects confidence in our region and creates new opportunities for tourism, local businesses, and fan experiences.” said Mayor Paul Young, City of Memphis.

“As the Commissioner for District 1, I am thrilled about IHRA’s acquisition of Memphis Motorsports Park. This investment strengthens our local economy, puts world-class racing back on solid ground, and gives our families and young people a safe, exciting place to create memories for years to come. Having a national organization like IHRA committed to the long-term success of this historic facility is exactly the kind of partnership Shelby County needs.” said Amber Mills, Shelby County Commissioner, District 1, Shelby County Government.

“Memphis Motorsports Park has long contributed to tourism and economic activity in Millington and Shelby County, and IHRA’s acquisition represents a positive step forward for the facility and the community. This investment supports the continued use of the track as a regional destination while creating opportunities for local businesses and future growth. The Millington Area Chamber of Commerce looks forward to working with IHRA as this next chapter takes shape.” said Chris Thomas, Executive Director, Millington Area Chamber of Commerce.

“This is a special place in American motorsports,” said Darryl Cuttell, CEO of IHRA. “This facility has a deep history in drag racing and stock car competition, and our goal is to honor that legacy while building a strong, sustainable future. We are committed to bringing meaningful racing back to this property while expanding its role as a destination for a wide range of events that serve racers, fans, and the surrounding community.”

“This acquisition represents more than reopening a racetrack,” said Leah Martin, President of IHRA. “It is about restoring opportunity for racers, families, and the community. This facility aligns with IHRA’s racer-first vision and our commitment to grassroots motorsports, while also allowing the property to support diverse uses that strengthen its year-round impact.”

“Memphis Motorsports Park holds a special place in our hearts,” said Daniel Horton, Assistant Director of the IHRA Stock Car Series. “Bobby Hamilton won the 2004 Craftsman Truck Series race here in a truck built by Tim and with Danny as the crew chief. With the facility now under the IHRA umbrella, we can give grassroots racers a chance to compete where legendary drivers such as Kevin Harvick, Randy LaJoie, and the late Greg Biffle have won. We are extremely excited to bring stock car racing back to Memphis and continue the legacy of this iconic track.”

In the coming days, IHRA will begin facility improvements and operational preparations. Fans and community members are encouraged to follow IHRA across its social media platforms for updates and behind-the-scenes coverage as revitalization efforts get underway. Further announcements regarding schedules and programming will be released in the near future.

Ultimate Guy's night out
This ultimate "Guys night out" included hand-rolled cigars, finely crafted timepieces, single-barrel bourbon, and exotic sports cars. DeBoulle Diamond and Jewelry puts on this event annually for some of their best friends and customers, and Races2U has been privileged to be a part of it for several years now. This is one occasion where it is okay to drink and drive- when you drive a simulator. The hospitality of the Boulle family is first-rate, as are the exquisite watches and jewelry that are the hallmark of this luxurious store. Unique, one of a kind hand crafted pieces as well as some of the most prestigious watches are on display in their beautiful showrooms, both at the Houston location in the pictures here as well as the store in Dallas. They happened to have a rare 50mm Titanium Rolex allocated to them which one lucky gentleman purchased, pictured here in between two Rolex Daytonas. This boutique is definitely a place where horologists and race fans can come together and share their passions, and maybe purchase a future heirloom. https://www.races2u.com/ultimate-guys-night-out/

Yokohama Tire at the Big O Tires Conference
Yokohama Tire who not only makes tires for almost everything from sports and race cars to big rigs and commercial trucks is introducing some new aggressive off-road tires at the Big O Tires conference in San Antonio Texas, including the new gorgeous Geolandar X-MT (not yet available in stores).  So, to help promote their off-road line, they hired us to set up an off-road style slot car track.   We used the Ninco digital system and off-road vehicles from Ninco and SCX.  These slot cars have four wheel drive and independent suspension just like the full size models, which helps them navigate the rough terrain on our slot car track.  Our gracious hosts at Yokohama and many of the attendees from Big O Tires had fun racing on the track during the conference.  Of course there was some fierce competition too!  This slot car racing really was bringing out the kid in a lot of the adults.  Thank you to the wonderful folks at Yokohama and Big O Tires for having us be a part of your event. https://www.races2u.com/yokohama-tire-at-the-big-o-tires-conference/

Men and Women of Steel
Races2U provided racing excitement for the Dennis Steel company's annual holiday party last week. This is a company that treats its employees very well and it shows. Not only did they have our Formula 1 racing simulators there for the staff to engage in some friendly competition, but they had many other activities as well. It was great to see a company like this going all out for their staff. They had food catered from one of our local favorites, Lupe Tortilla, and a great DJ Rocio Valdes. They had a raffle of all sorts of cool prizes, and this company also has profit sharing for its employees. We really enjoyed working with this great group of people! https://www.races2u.com/men-and-women-of-steel/
It seems like Races2U is becoming a Las Vegas Trade Show specialist.  This month we had the privilege to work with Fujitsu, who was one of the main sponsors of the NetApp Insight conference.  The Fujitsu booth was the most popular in the show, with lines of people coming to race, and spectators cheering on as they competed to win a laptop.  Fujitsu were very gracious hosts and had some amazing technology on display.  It was great working with them, and we hope to do it again in the near future. https://www.races2u.com/back-in-vegas-again/

Slots and Sims at Dell
Races2U and Dell have been working together for many years now, and we are proud to continue to provide our slot car racing and simulators for many of their events, and we use many of their products to power our racing. Races2U uses Alienware computers for our high-end sims, and Dell Laptops for our lap counting software for slot cars and RC cars. This particular event was a product launch held at the company's corporate HQ in Round Rock, Texas. We've even had occasion to race with Michael Dell himself at a couple of these events. Thank you Michael and all the great Dell staff for continuing to partner with Races2U for your racing needs! https://www.races2u.com/slots-and-sims-at-dell/
